چکیده

Many seemingly simple questions that individual users face in their daily lives may actually require substantial number of computing resources to identify the right answers. For example, a user may want to determine the right thermostat settings for different rooms of a house based on a tolerance range such that the energy consumption and costs can be maximally reduced while still offering comfortable temperatures in the house. Such answers can be determined through simulations. However, some simulation models as in this example are stochastic, which require the execution of a large number of simulation tasks and aggregation of results to ascertain if the outcomes lie within specified confidence intervals. Some other simulation models, such as the study of traffic conditions using simulations may need multiple instances to be executed for a number of different parameters. This paper presents SIMaaS, which is a cloudbased Simulation-as-a-Service to address these challenges. We demonstrate how lightweight solutions using Linux containers (e.g., Docker) are better suited to support such services instead of heavyweight hypervisor-based solutions, which are shown to incur substantial overhead in provisioning virtual machines on-demand. Empirical results validating our claims are presented in the context of two

A tutorial on cloud computing for agent-based modeling & simulation with repast

Cloud computing facilitates access to elastic high performance computing without the associated high cost. Agent-based Modeling & Simulation (ABMS) is being used across many scientific disciplines to study complex adaptive systems. Repast Simphony (Recursive Porous Agent Simulation Toolkit) is a widely used ABMS system. Cloud computing can speed-up significantly ABMS to facilitate more accurate...

Access control in ultra-large-scale systems using a data-centric middleware

The primary characteristic of an Ultra-Large-Scale (ULS) system is ultra-large size on any related dimension. A ULS system is generally considered as a system-of-systems with heterogeneous nodes and autonomous domains. As the size of a system-of-systems grows, and interoperability demand between sub-systems is increased, achieving more scalable and dynamic access control system becomes an im...

A necessary paradigm change to enable composable cloud-based M&S services

Cloud-based M&S can have many forms, from hardware as a service or cloud-based data for M&S applications to providing M&S as a service. In order to be able to compose such cloud-based M&S services, these services not only need to be able to exchange data and use such exchanged data, they also must represent truth consistently. Current paradigms are not sufficient to support these requirements. ...

Cloud Architecture for Dynamic Service Composition

Service composition provides value-adding services through composing basic Web services, which may be provided by various organizations. Cloud computing presents an efficient managerial, on-demand, and scalable way to integrate computational resources (hardware, platform, and software). However, existing Cloud architecture lacks the layer of middleware to enable dynamic service composition. To ...
